Topic: Healthy ways to fight cravings-
tinap1, May 19 2009 8:19 am51 words

I've been trying to seek out healthy substitutions for my cravings and it's been working. Instead of reaching for chips and dip, my all time favorite, I'll get some crunchy celery and low-fat ranch dressing. The crunch combined with the dip-like taste does the trick. Does anyone have any other tips?

I've never really thought about this one.

For me, I usually just give into the craving. Get it over with and be done with it.
In my experience if I really really want it I'm better off eating it instead of eating everything that doesn't run away.
A little bit of something is better than a whole lot of fillers.

I know when I've finished a meal and still want to eat eat eat
a cup of coffee hits the spot.
That might help a craving.

A salad would be another healthy alternative.
When I get home I want to eat.
Yesterday when I got home I went ahead a fixed a salad and that helped.

Getting busy with some type of activity would be another way to fight a craving.

Taking a nice hot bath is another way to fight a craving.

Hmmm, I think I need to think about this a bit more
Good topic

Hi, I am new here - T2 for 25 years. Was on meds at first, now on indulin. Levemir/long lasting and humalog according to carbs I eat. I have read and heard that a good way to avoid the "cravings" is to have a few nuts, celery, even berries. I have a stomach problem and cannot eat those things. Yes, I know about getting involved in something else too. I guess I am feeling sorry for myself as far as not being able to eat certain things. I do like my crafts like my card making. Have lots of supplies for that. Many times I will get on the computer so I won't eat. Maybe I should just try 2-3 nuts and maybe my stomach won't be bothered by just that much. And the berries, love them, can't have them because of the seeds. I wonder if taking fiber pills would possibly help make me feel more full and I wouldn't eat more/what I shouldn't? What does anyone think about this?

Welcome to the message boards! I hear you loud and clear that you're working hard to get control of cravings. Have you talked with your doctor about a fiber supplement? I would get her opinion before trying anything. Often, drinking a glass of water and moving to a different room helps me get control of a craving. The key is to keep my mind busy and get away from whatever is causing the craving.

Hi LynnGr, thanks for the welcome. No I haven't talked to my dr about the fiber supplement. I did talk to her about symlin, but she wants to do something else first - a carb class. I don't know if I will learn anything new, but------. I have also been thinking, I am an only child and remember that my whole life everything was done for me. Now, these things, keeping myself from eating too much or the wrong things, getting busy with something else, it was always just done for me - now I have to do it on my own. At 62 that isn't always so easy. Well, if I want to live a happy, healthy life, I just got to, right? - right!
Thanks again

I think you summed up your motivation nicely: you want to lead a healthy, happy life. I'm sure you can make these changes that will help you reach this goal. Let us know about the carb class.

Thanks for letting us know about the carb class. It's great that you rescheduled; that shows you're determined to understand how carbs affect blood sugar levels.
