Topic: Ways to conquer mindless eating-
tinap1, Mar 23 2009 9:10 am51 words

I've recently cut out eating while I'm watching TV and have actually lost a few pounds. If I get the munchies during a show, I'll wait until a commercial and grab a handful of grapes or popcorn and eat the snack in the kitchen. Any other tips to avoid mindless eating?

Eating while watching TV has the snowball affect for me. Like the ever ready bunny I just keep on going and going and going back to the food and putting it in my mouth. So for me it's best not to even begin eating while watching TV.
Of course what's best for me doesn't always stop me from doing the opposite.

I've thought after the fact if I'd just put a big glass of water or crystal lite by me I'd have been fine.
So far thinking is as far as I've gotten.
Hopefully I will progress from the thinking stage to the action stage soon.

One thing that has worked for me when I'm in the keep on eating mode is having a large cup of hot coffee. This fills me up and kills my appetite.
I've also noticed that when I seriously exercise I don't seem to mindlessly eat. Frankly I've been able to skip after supper snacks when I exercise w/o even thinking about it.

tinap, I like your idea of going to the kitchen to eat during a commercial.

Brady, emotional eating is a tough thing. I call it stress eating.
About a month ago I had to deal with a very rough situation at work. I work with special needs individuals and sometimes it's very difficult and stressful.
That week I went home and ate everything in sight.
It didn't change my situation.

When I went to a weight loss meeting I talked about it with my leaders and my fellow class members. Just being able to talk about it helped a lot. The next time things got rough at work I was able to deal with it a whole lot better and deal with it in a non-food way.

Another thing that helps me is writing about it.
Somehow just putting it on paper helps a lot.

Exercise also helps with emotional eating.

When you feel the need to emotional eat identifying what's causing you to want to eat may help.
