Topic: How can I manage neuropathy?-
LynnGr, Nov 17 2008 8:30 pm69 words

I've been hearing a lot about neuropathy lately, or the numbness and tingling that people with diabetes can develop in their feet and hands. This is related to high blood sugar levels over time which causes nerve damage. So managing blood sugar levels on a daily basis is very important. For people who have already developed this type of nerve damage, are there ways to help manage the symptoms?

Hi Lynn, that was a very good question that I'm surprised no one has answered. I'd like to know the answer to that as well. Here is a question that may have some connection to yours. This morning I hit my toes really hard against a game chair by accident. Tonight I have a purple 3rd toe, literally. I do not have health insurance to where I can go to a doctor unless I wait for weeks. Is this something I should worry about or is it possible that being a diabetic, I need to have it looked at? In other words, can I lose my toe due to this? Thanks.

Please contact your health care provider as soon as possible for individual guidance.

betz -- LynnGR is right on target -- see your health care professional as soon as possible so that he or she can asess the status of the toe you bumped. Everyone knows, or at least I hope they know, good foot care for diabetics is critical. Regarding neuropathy, again, your health care professional should be aware of that issue. There are several medications available that may help -- your health care professional can asses your situation and determine with you, which medication to use, if any.

Thanks for the positive feedback, and of course you're absolutely right about good, consistent, foot care.
