Topic: What do you think about support groups?-
LynnGr, Oct 3 2008 6:39 pm50 words

Many people with diabetes find it helpful to belong to a support group where they can share their difficulties, find others in similar situations, and benefit from learning from each other. Have you ever attended a diabetes support group? What were the most positive aspects of these groups for you?

I think that it would be a big help for me. My family is not supportive and I can not discuss anything with them.

I think support groups can be very helpful. I am lucky in the fact that my family is good in this area; however I hate to feel like I'm complaining all of the time. A support group might also help to make me feel like I am really understood. Really how can someone know your frustrations of controlling your blood sugars if they aren't in the same boat?

Both responses indicate that support groups can be helpful. Do either of you belong to a support group? Would anyone like to share your experience with a support group?

I don't belong to an actual support group, but I kind of view this site as one. I have just recently logged on and love all the info available. I know it will help to keep me motivated to do the right things, even if I "fall off the wagon" or don't feel like it.
Thank you!

You're absolutely right that this website functions as a support group. It's a great option for people who either don't have a group nearby, or perhaps don't want to travel to a group. Plus, you can access this group whenever you want! I'm glad you're finding it helpful.

We're definintely here for you! It sounds like you've already lost some weight, and that's definitely going to be helpful. Do you feel like you're on track to continue losing weight, or are there areas you're struggling?

I just registered on this website for kinda a support group. I do belong to one at the hospital close to my house. It is mostly retired people, and, turns out, mostly women, although we do have a few men who come. Don't get me wrong, we welcome the men, but I don't think most men attend support groups, either on the internet or attend one near their home. I also go on another website everyday and feel that it is a real support group for me. I guess I could introduce myself - I am T2 for over 20 years and went from diet/exercise to meds to insulin without meds. BUT I take other meds for other things like BP, cholestrol, etc. At my support at the hospital we can get very serious about this disease one min. and the next talk about others things and just laugh. We are a very supportive group with an EXELLANT facilitor who is a RD/CDE. The other website I go to is very helpful also and has a "chit chat" corner where we can talk about all kinds of things, not necessarily diagetes. Anyway, I love both of my support groups. Don't know that much about this one to really know if I like it or not. I know when I call someone connected with this they are always very helpful.

Welcome to the group! It's great that you've been able to find both "live" support groups in your area as well as virtual groups online. I'm sure you'll have a lot to share with us here as well.

I think support groups are wonderful.
I use to attend my on a regular basis but at the moment life seems to be getting in the way of attending the meetings.

I will be out of town for the July but I hope to start back in Aug.
