Topic: How do you treat a low blood sugar reading?-
LynnGr, Sep 22 2008 2:15 pm61 words

We've all heard the 15/15 rule for treating low blood sugars: consume 15 grams of quick-digesting carbohydrate and retest blood sugar levels in 15 minutes. What are your favorite quick-acting source of carbs to treat a low? Do you prefer to use real food, such as fruit juice, or do you find that a commercial glucose product works better for you?

For low blood sugar, I've used both regular food and products designed for treating it. I've found that the products work just fine, but so does food. The problem with food is the temptation to eat too much of it. Personally, I like fruit or fruit juice if it's available. I find I don't want to overeat it (like I might with bread), and it works well. In situations where food might not be available such as driving in the car, I do keep a product on hand to use though.

I think it makes sense to have a variety of different foods or products available to use in different situations. I hear you about making sure you choose something to treat the low that you won't overeat!
