Topic: Keeping a food journal-

Previously, we discussed weight loss strategies such as food journaling. Now, a study that will be released in the August issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, shows that keeping a food journal can double the amount of pounds you lose.

Have you ever used a food journal? If so, was it successful for you?

Why do you think writing it down helps? Do you ever use a journal for everyday thoughts or stress relief?

I periodically use a food journal to help me keep track of the little bits of food that I often forget about: the 2 crackers I grab while I'm making lunch, the apple I munch while I'm reading the paper, the chocolate kiss that sneaks it's way into my mouth. It's easy to remember meals, but those in-between and on-the-go foods are difficult to remember if I don't keep a food journal.

A food journal allows myself and others with Prediabetes or Diabetes to become more aware of the amount of food and beverages being intaked on a daily basis. It is an awesome tool for stress relief because it shows whether you are eating because you are hungry or is it strictly from emotional eating. Usually to see patterns of behavior, you would go back and review the information seven days later.

For me to be successful it takes both preplanning my food the night before and then journaling it.
