Topic: Traveling with insulin-
LynnGr, Aug 1 2008 2:36 pm51 words

Traveling with insulin entails special precautions to make sure it doesn't get too hot or too cold. Even the inside of a parked car can reach high temperatures. What works for you when traveling by car, or even on an all-day hiking or biking trip, keep your insulin at optimum temperature?

When traveling by car, we put my husband's insulin in the cooler, but not directly on the ice. He has a case it goes inside of, and then we put that in a small tray meant for sandwiches and the like in the cooler. In hotels, we ask for a small refrigerator. In a pinch, we have taken a bucket of ice, put a small towel over it, and then put the case with the insulin. So far, we haven't had a problem.

These are great ideas! Have you ever tried one of the coolers that plugs into your car? That way you don't have to use ice, and it keeps everything cold when you're traveling, or at least while the car is moving.

I haven't tried one of the plug-in coolers for the car. I've seen them, but have never known anyone who has tried them. I don't want to spend the money on one if it doesn't work very well! Have you ever tried one?

I haven't tried one myself, but I know a bunch of people who have and they uniformly give good reviews.

Thanks for letting me know they seem to be worth it. The next time we're going on a long car ride, I will definitely consider getting one. It's worth it not to have to worry as much about the temperature of the insulin!
