Topic: Who is your role model?-
LynnGr, Jun 14 2008 3:41 pm63 words

We often have role models for various parts of our lives. Perhaps a teacher was a special role model when we were in school, or a colleague at work is a role model for what we want to achieve professionally. Do you have a role model related to diabetes? Please share what that person means to you, and how you've learned from them.

I have a very good friend who has had diabetes from the time she was a child (type 1). She takes the disease very seriously and is always monitoring her eating, blood sugar levels, and stress levels. As a consequence, she's had very few complications over the years. I have learned that it is possible to live a full life and take care of your diabetes from her. I've also learned that good control means good overall health. I strive to be like her!

Your friend sounds like a wonderfully positive influence, and goodness knows we can all use a dose of more positive thoughts in our lives. All too often we focus on the negatives of our situation, instead of looking at all of the positive aspects. Thanks for reminding us the power of positive thinking - and having a positive role model.

Although my mother did not have diabetes, she always took care in what she ate. Even in her 80's she walked or swam (at the YMCA) everyday. She played golf until she was 87. She is clearly my role model for taking care of yourself.

It's wonderful you have such a strong role model in your mother. I had a grandmother like that who was on a bowling league until the day she passed away. She was always active, ate well, and one of those people who just knew how to inspire you. I miss her :). Your mother sounds quite a bit like her!

What great inspirations both of you have! There's a 69 year old woman in my community who participates in all the local 5K and 10K races. She's an inspiration to just about every younger runner I know, because she always has a smile, an encouraging word, and is a lot of fun to be around! I just hope that one day I can be an inspiration for others as well.
