Topic: How to calorie count-
tinap1, Apr 8 2009 9:53 am55 words

Calorie counting can be such a complex process. I usually just take the calories of a food into consideration, and I don't really monitor the total fat, fiber, etc. Is this the best way to do it, or should I be doing something based on the entire nutritional content of each food item I consume?

When I count calories I simply read the label.
If it's fast food I have a calorie count book which I look that up in.
Sometimes I even go to the fast food's website and look up the calorie count.

To determine how many calories I've had I add up the calorie counts.
That's all I do with calories.

My meal plan gives me a certain number of fats, carbs, and proteins I can have.
Fat is seperate from calories.
I keep up with all of those counts too.
Those other things are important for a diabetic to be aware of because:
Carbs have a direct effect on blood glucose.
Fat affects cholesterol and the nasty illnesses that go with to much of that.
Protein molecules are bigger than other food and that affects your kidneys.
I eat more protein than I should and my filtration rate is slower than it should be.
I don't know if to much protein has affected me in that way.

In the past I've lost weight counting calories only.
In fact one time I lost 50 lbs by just counting calories.
Of course that was before diabetes.

Yep, sometimes I get tired of it all.
