Some of the problem with diabetics having strokes and heart attacks comes from lots of high glucoses. That excess sugar is kinda on the same principal as excess cholesterol. So from that stand point getting your glucose under control and keeping it there will go a long way there. Or at least that what the CDE keeps telling us.
I'd think selecting non-starchy veggies would be beneficial to your heart. I also think starchy veggies are ok as long as you follow the diabetic servings. 1/3 c seems to be the standard at the moment. Fruits would also be a good choice unless your tryglercerides and high. Then you should limit or leave off fruit until that's under control. Tryglercerides are blood fat.
As far as meat goes they should be lean meats. chicken, fish, sirlion, loin cuts of pork. You can now buy very lean ground beef. The lower the fat content the better.
There are some types of fish that are suppose to be better for you and your heart. I guess do a search for that information.
Watching your sodium intake in order to keep your bp in check is a good idea too. A high bp is going to affect your heart and can lead to stroke.
Eggs. Egg beaters or another egg substitute is a good idea there. You can have whole eggs but you need to limit those weekly. I forget how many a week are ok.
We all need some type of fat in our diet but the lower the fat the better. When buying margarine look for the low fat types. There are lots of good salad dressings, mayonaise etc that are low fat. I've also heard olive oil is a good thing In the low fat vs fat free my dietician tells me that low fat is a better choice than fat free. Fat free has more carbs in it than low fat. Frankly the low fat tastes better to me.
Another good thing would be to find out how much cholesterol is ok for you each day and try not to go over that number.
I would love to hear other peoples ideas on this subject. I hope other people will begin posting. |
