Topic: eating out?-

I love to go to Mexican restaurants, but it seems like everything is high in carbohydrates. What are your favorite, lower carb food choices when you eat out?

I love Mexican too :)

MiToro's has a shrimp plate I absolutely love.
It has rice, grilled shrimp, salad, and cheese (but not much).
I like the rice and can have 3 carb choices at supper. So I go with that.
Something else you could do at a Mexican resturant is have just a few chips(3-4).
When I get fajitas I throw away the tortillas and just enjoy the meat, and veggies. No starving children or adults have been harmed by this action.

I also love their shrimp taco salad. A good idea would be to throw away the shell and just enjoy the inside. I haven't been very successful at throwing away the shell. The shrimp plate seem to be the shrimp taco salad w/o the shell. So it's a nice alternative.

I've tried to have them not put certain items on my plate such as the shell when I get the taco salad. But they don't do that. May be a cultural thing and they may feel insulted. Or they're just bound and determined to give you your money's worth. Hmmm, wonder if they can say heat attack.
So it's up to me to just throw it away. I haven't been good about throwing things away but I'm getting better all the time.

I think you can enjoy the food you want but maybe not all that is served. Some people have told me they put 1/2 their food in a to go plate before they begin eating. I think maybe I'm finally grown up enough to try that. We're eating out tomorrow night with a group from our church and I believe I'll ask for one as I order.

Here's some ideas that may let you have your carbs and eat them too.

Eat only 1/2 the baked potato and either take the other 1/2 home or leave it on your plate.
I promise no one is going to make you clean your plate before you leave.

Have them put your rice on the side. Sometimes rice serves as a bed for other foods so if you really really want the rice just ask them to put it on the side. Eat your serving size and leave the rest or take it home.

If you get a steak meal your going to get salad, texas toast, crackers, and a steak that is way way to big.
So eat a few bites of the toast, 1/2 the baked tater, and tell them to hold the crackers. Or if you make your own salad just leave those crackers on the salad bar. As far as Mr. Big STeak goes eat your allowed portion and them introduce him to Mr Freezer at your home. Sometimes you can get 3 meals out of a steak.

I love Chinese.
I usually don't get noodles or rice because they're not something I really want.
But if you do get just a little and enjoy.
Sometimes a little goes a long way.
I find when I eat out a little of the food is much more enjoyable then eating a lot of it.
Fill up on salad, a bit of fruit, and other less carby foods.

If your meal comes with say both refried beans and rice maybe decide which one you really want that night and not have the other.
If you gotta have both then have just a little of both but be honest and make sure it's just a little.

Thanks for this question. It's helped me to think about ways to eat out and still be ok meal plan and glucose wise.

I love all your ideas! I do the same as you with fajitas - I just skip the tortillas and eat the chicken and vegetables. I can't just eat 3-4 chips, though!

Thank you
That's neat we both throw away the tortillas. Small world isn't it?
The only reason I can get away with so few chips is because they taste like big ole corn flakes to me. I like corn flakes but not as a chips.

So what are some other things you do? You might give me some ideas too.

One of my friends told me that when she eats at a Chinese restaurant she asks for half the sauce as a way to decrease calories. I thought that was a neat idea!

Another friend asks for her pizza to be double cut, meaning instead of cutting it into 8 slices, they cut it into 16 slices. That way she can have two "slices" and still feels like she's getting a large portion.

I routinely ask for a double vegetable serving instead of the starch. Then I eat my husband's vegetables as well :)

I like those ideas especially the pizza one :)

Saturday we had Mexican. I had Thomas ask them to leave off the cheese sauce or perhaps it's their cheese dip once again and this time they did :)

What do they say: the customer is always right?

It sounds like you had a great meal!
