Topic: Law to discourage extreme "thinness?"-
tinap1, Sep 12 2008 8:54 am60 words

In France, where you often see super skinny models and those involved in high fashion, legislators have introduced a proposed law that would make it illegal for advertisers, fashion magazines and Web sites to encourage extreme thinness.

What do you think about this effort?

Do you think efforts like this will help create a healthier/more realistic body image for people?

I don't know if a law is going to help change society's preferences and perceptions of "ideal" weight. While it's good that people are realizing being very thin is a health risk, I don't actually think we can legislate this. The change has to come from people refusing to buy magazines with thin models, refusing to attend fashion shows with thin models, refusing to watch movies with thin actresses.
