Topic: What do you use to measure portions?-
LynnGr, Jun 18 2008 7:18 pm75 words

Portion control is one important method for weight loss. There are several different ways to approach portion control, including using measuring cups and spoons, a kitchen scale to weigh foods, portion-controlled dishes, or objects to remind us of portion sizes (such as a deck of cards for 3 ounces of meat). What's your favorite method of ensuring you're eating optimal portions of foods?

Which foods do you find most difficult to stay within portion guidelines?

I use the "deck of cards" trick a lot. It just seems to click for me. Other than that, I try to eat a plum size portion of any potatoes or carbs, and then if I need to, go overboard on the vegetables. Since I like to eat larger portions, eating the right foods in a bigger portion is key. I have done the measuring thing in the past, but I really don't like it.

Have you ever used the plate method for meals? This one is simple, and easy for me to do. Half of your plate is veggies in any combination. One-quarter of the plate is for protein, and the remaining one-quarter for starch like rice, potato or bread. It really helps keep everything in perspective, and doesn't require actual 'measuring'.

I love the plate method! I hadn't heard of it before, but I think I will start using it. It not only makes sense, but it is very simple to do. Thanks for the infomation!
